Highlights to see at the Galleria Borghese’s Collection during your travels from Civitavecchia to Rome

This intimate gallery space contains two levels. The first floor showcases many of the Ancient Roman collection from the 1st to the 3rd century AD and Bernini’s first four monumental marble sculptures. These sculptures were commissioned by the cardinal and launched sculptor’s career.

When you first enter the gallery you will see Bernini’s Pluto and Proserpina. Here Pluto, the god of the Underworld, kidnaps Proserpina, the daughter of Demeter. A single tear trickles down Proserpina’s cheek as she screams and fights Pluto, whose faithful three headed dog Cerberus guards the gate to the underworld. Make sure to walk all around the sculpture and see it from all the angles. Think about how Bernini evoked different textures in the hard marble, from Cerberus’ coarse fur, to Pluto’s smooth skin, to Proserpina’s wispy hair.

As you continue through the first floor keep an eye out for Bernini’s other early works Apollo and Daphne, Aneas, Anchises, and Ascanius, and David. If, during your travels from Civitavecchia to Rome, you continue on to Florence, think about how Bernini’s David differs from Michelangelo’s earlier gigantic statue of David. Best NCC Roma’s drivers will be happy to help you with any or your reservation or transfer needs.

The Pinacotheca, or painting gallery, is located on the second floor, along with more sculptures by Bernini, including his two famous portraits of Scipione Borghese and a small desktop bust of Pope Paul V Borghese. Here you will also see Raphael’s Lady with a Unicorn , and several paintings by Caravaggio such as his Boy with a Basket of Fruit and the Sick Bacchus
